Principal’s Message
The purpose of the Year 9 Mannix Programme is to offer students with the opportunity to optimise their learning and their physical, spiritual and social development in an environment and following an educational programme best suited to their needs. It seeks to actively engage students in learning, encourages them to take ever greater responsibility for their own learning and personal development, and offers an extensive range of opportunities to take initiative, exercise leadership and explore and develop their own talents.

Educational research has identified the Middle Years of secondary schooling as a time when adolescents sometimes struggle with issues of identity, purpose and meaning. Social conventions are often tested, sometimes leading to anti-social or destructive behaviours, and possibly, alienation from learning as a valuable endeavour. Salesian College’s Year 9 Mannix programme is a pro-active educational response to this phenomenon: it seeks to prevent potential problems by preempting and addressing directly in a caring community context that values learning and wellbeing.

Salesian College’s purpose-built Mannix Campus, which has recently been further improved by the provision of additional facilities and extensive landscaping, provides a stimulating educational environment that fosters a strong sense of community, belonging and identity for our boys. The curriculum, with an emphasis upon quality experiential learning, is designed to allow students to more effectively engage in learning in an active manner suited to adolescent boys. There are significant opportunities for students to interact with the wider community, explore their own talents, to undertake substantial challenges and to develop social, leadership and personal skills.

A unique and innovative aspect of the curriculum is a series of multi-discipline units that engage students in the active exploration of the local and global community, the City of Melbourne, local and global environmental issues, their own talents. These practical curriculum units include a range of experiential activities including excursions, wetland visits, tours of local and metropolitan sites of interest, a three-day wilderness camp and community service.

The Architecture
The design and architecture of the new Year Nine Campus will allow students, and teachers, to break away from some of the traditional paradigms of education that have, in the past, presented barriers to successful learning.

This visionary building design, with its associated Curriculum, form the platform required for students to explore and receive inspirational and enthusiastic learning. Displaying large open classrooms, fully equipped with the latest facilities in computer technology and educational resources, the Mannix Campus is set amid 10 hectares of maintained grounds. Our students are able to form a strong learning community that enhances spiritual development.

CURRICULUM
Our new Year 9 Curriculum has been developed to reflect leading educational standards in boys' education. It will

  • academically challenge and encourage each student to value his unique talents and interests.
  • foster self-directed learning, leading to enhanced student autonomy.
  • provide greater opportunity for group interaction, co-operation and leadership development.
  • encourage each student to become aware of his place in society including responsibility to himself, his school and the wider community.
  • encourage the use of Information Literacy Skills and Information & Communication Technologies as effective learning tools.
  • ensure the transition into Year 10 is progressive and productive.

The new Curriculum will comprise

  • a broad education drawing from all Key Learning Areas.
  • additional electives.
  • Bosco Units, which are project based learning experiences.

These Bosco Units draw primarily, but not exclusively, from the Science, Studies of Society and Environment and Religious Education Key Learning Areas. Being generally thematic in nature, these units will allow students to develop greater awareness of themselves as responsible and informed members of their communities.
