Student leadership has always been a feature of the Salesian Preventive System. St. John Bosco realised that "his boys" were more easily influenced by their friends and fellow students than by their teachers. He encouraged his leaders to be positive role models, to take on responsibility and to look after the younger boys in their care. At Salesian College, students assume leadership roles from Year 7 and the responsibility given to the boys increases as they mature. At Year 7 this responsibility may involve such tasks as 'roll monitor' or 'lunch order monitor', whereas by Year 12 the College Captains will organise and lead Whole College Assemblies. House Liturgies and play a major part in fundraising activities. At all levels the leaders meet regularly with the Level Co-ordinators, Heads of House and the Director of Student wellbeing to provide feedback and assist in the smooth running within each year level and House. There is an end of year formation camp where student leaders are engaged in workshops that develop their team working, communication and initiative skills.
There are numerous leadership opportunities available for students at Salesian College. The general role of our leaders is to strive to uphold the principles and beliefs of the College and to be a role model to other students. This is achieved by working to achieve their personal best in all areas. Don Bosco wanted his students to leave his care as ‘Good Christians and Honest Citizens’, and we at Salesian College expect nothing less.
