APPEARANCE AND ATTIRE

Students must maintain a high standard in the wearing of their College uniform and in their personal presentation. This includes ensuring that the students:

  • Wear their uniform correctly, neatly and proudly at all times.
  • Refrain from extreme fashions in dress, hairstyles and appearance.
  • Avoid the wearing of jewellery (other than a simple cross around the neck).
  • Be clean shaven at all times.

NOTES

The Sports Uniform is to be worn on official sports days only. If the complete sports uniform cannot be worn on such days, then the complete formal uniform must be worn in its place.

RESPONSIBILITIES

There is no doubt that all key groups within the College - students, parents and staff - must take on certain responsibilities if the College Uniform is to be worn as it should be:

STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES

Students have the responsibility of adhering to the College Uniform Code on a daily basis. However, it is important that they not only wear the required uniform items at the correct time, but that they wear them in a NEAT, CLEAN and PROUD manner. In this respect, they should avoid casualness and untidiness at all times. They should also play their part in ensuring that their uniform is pressed, repaired or replaced when needed, and that mislaid clothing is promptly recovered. Finally, in the interest of safety, students need to be aware of the necessity of wearing appropriate clothing and footwear in certain situations.

PARENT RESPONSIBILITIES

Parents have the responsibility of providing their sons with the complete and correct uniform, and ensuring that it is labelled, repaired, replaced, cleaned and pressed when required. They should also insist that their sons both leave and arrive home in neat and complete uniform, and should constantly encourage their sons to abide by the College Uniform Code. Finally, parents should continue to be positive examples for their sons in this important area of their lives.

STAFF RESPONSIBILITIES

Staff-members have the responsibility of clearly and consistently reminding students of the College's uniform requirements, and of inspecting their uniforms on a regular basis. By encouragement and praise, and also by references in reports, newsletters and noticeboards and during classes and homeroom meetings, staff-members will do their best to heighten the students' appreciation of the College Uniform Code. Finally, staff need to be role models in terms of their own attire and should always dress in a manner appropriate to the occasion and to their particular duties.

CONSEQUENCES

Nevertheless, those students who consistently fail to abide by the College Uniform Code, and refuse to accept their responsibilities in regard to wearing their uniform neatly and correctly, need to be aware that they will face certain consequences for their lack of responsibility. Such consequences will be administered in a prompt and decisive manner and may consist of:

a)       issuing a ‘caution’ in the Study Planner
b)       issuing of a "uniform slip" by the Year Level Co-ordinator;
c)       counselling and warning;
d)       interviews with students and parents;
e)       confiscation of non-uniform items for a set period of time;
f)       exclusion from College representation and excursions;
g)       after-school detention and/or after-school work and cleaning.

CONCLUSION

All members of the Salesian College Community are positively encouraged to play their part in making the College Uniform Code an effective reality in the life of the College. Moreover, they are invited to see adherence to the code not merely as conformity to an imposed set of rules and regulations, but as a means of building up the self-esteem, pride and reputation of the students themselves, thereby preparing them to take their rightful place in adult society in the future.
